I noticed that the site was loading two different caches and I couldn't really understand why. It didn't bother me because I figure it was something weird with my browser. It's common, but not enough to look into.

Until today.

I decided to simplify the homepage and noticed that I would sometimes see the old site and sometimes the correct new one. I figured cache, but then I checked my phone.

Similar issue.

This is a long way to say, somehow two processes were running that was toggling between a zombie process and the current build.

The Lunch Rush

A story about a lunch break and the blurring of time.

The sun cooks me from above and the sidewalk cooks me from below as I walk to get my lunch. The vehicles scream past me in the opposite direction at an arms length. Warm gusts in between the stale warmth of today.

There is this new burger place that opened up and I can't seem to stop going back to it. It has become that work staple that I feel borderline embarrassed how much I go.

Parting Words from Chente

This is the kind of post you see on December 31st as a final word on the year. I am going to be different thanks to procrastination and the fact I didn't really know what to say about the year of our lord, 2025. It was a year of chaos and growth. It was a year of a stupid amount of things and reflections.

I haven't seen anyone look back on 2025 with any fondness, and I am no exception. It was a brutal year. A year of a collapse of an agreed upon reality, slop machines whirring and their outputs, and general malaise. A year of things that were not right. A year of "Whatever."

On the flipside, 2025 was also a year of growth. I found that this website is probably where I should be trying out new things to "stay sharp," in my field of building and maintaining websites. So I started to dive deeper into Astro to see how it could be a better fit for me and I have been enjoying it. I also started to build Chivo as a way to explore what software development can look like for me. It's been a fun experiment and it is slowly becoming the tool I want it to be.

It may eventually manage this website! We'll see.

As the year comes to a close, I want to say thank you to anyone who has read my words or enjoyed my art. I hope 2026 is a year of more artistic expression for myself and for others.

Making a home page that works as a useful presentation of the goings ons at hmmburger.com is a bit of a challenge. Especially when the stuff on this site is not entirely linear, but this website exists in a linearity of sorts. You, the reader, are the one who needs the linearity as everything on this site has existed forever in a sense. I, the creator of this website, exists through the linearity, riding gravity waves as a way to reveal what needed to be revealed.

Anyway, things are somewhat becoming normalish around here. We have more napkins than burgers now, but that's okay and why the latest napkin takes over as a visual treat. In a way, this becomes more of a normal website. A featured item, some featured items, a feed, and a sidebar to shove anything else in. Hmm.

Nap Timed

I knew I shouldn't have taken that nap. It was wonderful. My bones became dense and heavy as my muscles turned to stone. I was clay. I knew if I could move if I wanted, but the bed and covers trapped me deeper in the gravity well I had fallen into. Eventually, I got up. I didn't feel that groggy haze with uncommunicative muscles, as a matter of fact the small glass of water I had made the nap feel restorative. It filled my veins with a refreshing coolness that let my skin's pores breathe. The problem is, I work tomorrow morning and it's only a few hours until bedtime.

Upon reflection, it was decided that the homepage was a bit of a mystery meat. All ground up abstractions from the sections of the website without a real context. Then again, this website is a bit of a mystery meat itself.

You'll notice that there are more recent works from across Hmmburger. A featured work is still there but we have added more recent fictional stories, recent ramblings and updates, the latest napkin, and the latest zine.

Having a website like this has been refreshing and a way to have fun on the computer. It's pushed me to get back to the ideas around the "IndieWeb" and to engage with how the web is moving and how it is being built, not just consumed.

Importantly, Hmmburger has reminded me of why I started making websites in the first place. It was to have fun online, to share my art, and to learn how to make my page do "cool" things.

It has been fun to experiment with adding more words to my drawings and finding a way to find my written voice. I have enjoyed writing "The Lunch Rush" and "Temporada" and to feel comfortable with whatever I am doing with napkins. Lastly, it's been fun to make zines again as a way to bring these works into a physical form.

All that to say, more please.

It’s not entirely nice out, but I am enjoying being in my yard on this borderline hot day.

Decades of living in the desert turns you into an inverse lizard. You look for the best shade you can find and stay still. If you're lucky, a cool breeze will delight the senses.

A wall of mechanized sound reverberates behind me reminding me that it is indeed not nice out. In front of me, the sounds of my makeshift birdbath, wind chimes swinging in the breeze, and birds chirping at each other about what's good today.

Soon the mimosa tree begins to dance in the afternoon breeze, its shadow barely casts over the bottom of the solar panel causing my lovely birdbath to sputter and slow. Of course, I picked the worst solar panel money could buy.

As quickly as that breeze came, so did the afternoon crawl. The breeze turned into a whisper, the chimes stood still, but the spring was reinvigorated.

Then they swooped down. I didn’t see them, but a gang of house sparrows in the mimosa tree decided to claim the shredded bread butts. I wasn't going to use them and they were a bit stale, truly prime for the birds.

It wasn’t long until the chirping made way for cooing as now there is a dove family reunion. The darling inca doves, the soothing mourning doves, a couple of collared doves, and of course our maligned friend, the rock dove.

The sparrows kept lookout for the neighborhood cats. One in the tree and one on the power line watched as the feast turned into the neighborhood social. They kept their eyes on me, so I kept still to let the rest get that bread.

The larger doves had a crumb too many and began to bully the smaller ones. Most of them ignored them while the remaining hopped up onto the rocks to bathe in the plant saucer of water next to the bird bath.

The spring seemed to struggle for a moment but I didn't see what caused it. The remaining birds, hopping around looking for crumbs, were nowhere near the solar panel. Not a cloud in the sky. The air is still.

Just as quickly as it slowed, it was back to filling the yard with its soothing splashing.

“Never buy another cheap solar panel.” I think and begin to trail off, "I wonder how hard running low voltage is?"

Again, the lively splashing of the birdbath turned to a trickle.

I look up again, “Oh.”

I can get up and that'll cause them to scatter. Or I can let them wait and find out there is a hawk circling above.

Do I let them know? Who am I feeding?

A Decorated Horizon

Today, I woke up thinking about how I have been building websites for multiple decades. This website alone is nearly pushing 20 years old.

It may be the fact that it's Monday, but that thought kickstarted more thoughts around web development, creativity, websites, and free speech. Importantly, having my own website that I can experiment with has been such a refresher for me. It has allowed me to find a better place for my scattered thoughts and play with web technologies on my terms.

That being said, you'll notice the horizon on the footer has a beautiful mountain range and some flora to keep the Hmmburger laptop company.

Wheel Me Out

I am tired boss.

When you brought me in it was great. Do you remember opening the box and being blasted with that delightfully, questionably toxic air? So oddly refreshing and tantalizing!

Those early days with that new object feeling were some of the best days. I shaped myself to the odd curvatures of the job. I was supportive and eased the previous discomfort. Now, I have been pushed to the side. New chairs are nice, so maybe it's time to wheel me out.

The weight of holding miscellaneous objects stacked over time has made my wheels create increased gravity at my feet. I now require more effort to get me to move out of these grooves in the low pile carpet. Oh, how I never liked this carpet. That first time gliding across the office's concrete floors until I felt the first resistance of this carpet. From gliding to being a stick in the mud.

When it's the end of the day and I hear the alarm being set, the beeps begin as the lights flicker off, and the darkness plays tricks on me. I think much like you dream, the darkness makes way for light and form.

I'm sitting at the end of the office's driveway almost at the curb. The rougher surfaces of the asphalt and sidewalk deform my wheels, but I keep rolling myself out. The sun's warmth activates remaining compounds inside of me that release that scent that reminds me of that fresh plastic smell. A cool breeze carries my scent into the air and happens to hit the nose of a passerby. They stop, recognizing that familiar smell, and see me there glowing in a sunbeam. They begin to walk toward me and I start to wake up.

The alarm begins to beep and the lights flicker on. The staccato of beeps from the alarm being disabled brings me back to this place.

It's a new day.

Two travelers walked along the base of the mountain through the valley that others have passed through many times.

The travelers admired the tops of the ancient stones that time had slowly revealed.

The travelers held hands as they have before, but in this moment, time wanted to be remembered.

The sky began to fill with glistening yellows and deep oranges that squeezed the remaining blue from the sky.

A warmth filled the air but neither felt a sweat.

The ancient stones could be felt faintly vibrating as the sky settled.

The travelers looked up and saw a gift etched in the sky of their embrace.

"That's us," they said.

The Lunch Rush

There is this new burger place that opened up and I can't seem to stop going back to it. It's become such a workday staple, I'm borderline embarrassed by how often I go.

As I get closer I can see the strip mall and the burger place now taking the space of the old electronics store. It's sad cause that's where pappy bought me a soldering kit. Look at me now, a proud mechanical engineer.

The parking lot is half full, easy to cut through, no weird zig zagging today!

I take the cowpath that others have made through the strip malls landscaping. The shade of the trees on the little curbed desert islands in a sea of asphalt is nice little break from the onslaught of the sun. The sound of gravel crunching under my feet and the shade of the trees tricks me for a moment that I am not walking from a busy street to a strip mall.

Did I come here yesterday? I am wearing the same clothes.

Ding ding

The bells above the burger joint's door ring as I step inside.

I can smell the grill and hear the murmur of today's regulars. I think that’s a coven at the big table, but that’s not my business.

I walk to the counter and, without hesitation, as if today was going to be any different, I say, “combo number five.”

Of course, I hated the fact that it was my favorite meal here. It’s as if the owner had some sick twisted sense of humor. Number one should be what everyone wants, but real ones know number two is tried and true, but five? This isn’t the garden fresco salad.

But still, the simple cheeseburger combo is what’s up.

Ding ding

I’m reminded that others have entered after me.

“Thanks! We’ll bring it out to you when it’s ready. Enjoy your meal!”

“You too.”

Ding ding

“I always cause the lunch rush,” I pick out my booth, the one under the vent.

Okay, I’m pretty sure it’s a coven, they’re talking about a curse on a family and they don’t have many nice things to say about ancestors. Also it looks like there’s a tarot spread in the middle of the table, totally a coven.

Ding ding

I start to pull out my phone and put in my right earbud, keeping the left one in the case. I don’t want to appear rude when they bring my lunch. Sure, I can hear them with them both on, but they don’t know that.

“Here you go, can I get you anything else?” asked the server.

“Nope, thanks.”

“Enjoy your meal,” they say as they walk away.

The first ravenous bites hit the spot as they normally do, between the tiniest of breaths.

I blink and, somehow, half of the meal is gone.

“Whoa,” I pause and say to myself, “we still got another 30.”

I sit back and look around, noticing that the dining area is still pretty full. I begin to wonder when the AC is gonna kick on. Sure, it’s not too terrible outside but inside should still be comfortable, right?

The coven laughs in unison.

Ding ding

“I bet they did that,” I say to myself.

A stifled laughter in the booth next to me.

“Maybe your ancestors need to unburden themselves,” says the voice behind the laugh, in an increasingly sarcastic tone, “they never have anything good to say except pappy and dad.”

I stuff my mouth with a handful of fries to stifle my laugh. I can hear the voice in the booth over slightly chuckle. We knew we did not wish to be hexed by the coven. I especially have no need for magic myself, good or bad. Laws of thermodynamics or something.

The coven’s laughter begins to fade. The air conditioner kicks on and I begin to feel that cool air from the vent above me. That cold air makes me wish I had a light sweater, but right now this is a reprieve from walking in the sun.

I close my eyes and somehow that cool air reminds me of the droplets on the grass while waiting for the bus on a winter morning.

I lean back into the booth, satiated. The conversations in the lobby have blurred. I’m reminded of how when the weather is cool the highway sounds like a distant, roaring river. My eyes closed, I feel that cool breeze off the river wrap around me; I open my eyes.

I seem to see into infinity. Are my eyes open, are they closed? My mind wanders. I feel that cool breeze. I imagine sitting on my porch as a warmed afternoon gust makes me open my eyes.

The air conditioning shuts off. The coven is here, the jester in the neighboring booth is gone, and my tray is a picked over mess. I check my phone, “I better get going.”

“Can I take that?” the server asked, coming out of nowhere, as if they had waited for my return.

I look down at my tray and hand it to them.

“Yes, thank you!” I say as I notice my ear bud is still in my ear.

“Will we see you again tomorrow?”

I nervously laugh, “can’t, it’s the weekend.”

I pull the ear bud out of my ear and place it in its case. My case into my pocket.

Damn, I was here yesterday.

hmmburger to hmm... - We have renamed the hmmburger section to hmm and it will be the place to learn about this lovely website and what could be potentially going on here.

burger - A 3d rendering of a burger has appeared.

chicken - Bock! Bock! Bock!

links - Sharing links to other places on the internet worth visiting. Updated sporadically of course, but we have been finding some good new projects. Hypertext.tv is a good example of something we appreciate.

Some parting thoughts

Running this project has slowly become something I enjoy tinkering with and has started to spin off into a few different directions. I have been having fun and I think that was the main reason for removing the cobwebs off this website and to slowly not care about a grand vision.

It's allowed me to start writing words to go with my artwork and to make working on a website a bit more fun.

I've also thought more about the future of the web and it's kind of an interesting mess. It's also strengthened the need for this website to exist.

I will keep building out this corner of the internet and find ways to communicate the absurdity of the state of things. Hopefully creating a place that is a bit of a respite from the madness.

Receiving and Shipping

Boxes, stacked in the corner waiting for shipping.

The fluorescent lights and the air conditioning hum in unison.

The voices on the radio remind me that no one knows what they're supposed to be doing. Why take the reins when the automatons will do it for us? All we can do is wait, because the process has been relegated elsewhere but a promise is being repeated.

"Heard that before," every fiber of my body reminds me. My chair creaks in agreement.

It's not far.

Acknowledging Progress

Often times we get hung up on where we should be that we forget where we are and where we have been.

I have been working on an experimental thought management system. A place to keep track of abstract goals, measurable tasks, and floating ideas. A springboard of action and simple reminder or what we are interested in at the moment. A place for thoughts that have announced their arrival or intentions of arrival.

I have finally started to lay the real foundational work on this system which is an abstraction of my physical and digital systems that I have been using to manage my life and to work on my time blindness.

The current state is further along than any previous iteration and it is responding to many of the recent thoughts I have been having around design, development, and creativity. It may not be the most useful state, but it has reminded me, I am making progress.

Sometimes we make progress and it may not be exactly what we want, but it's progress.

The thing I have been reminding myself is, "I'm further along than I was before and thats better than where I was."

Keep on truckin' and keep on dreamin'.

The state of the internet isn't great.

We have a handful of companies controlling a handful of websites. Every company is building their modern day imagining of AOL. Walled gardens powered by greed, algorithms, and misery. Reflecting much of modern America.

We are allowing machines to fill our context with hallucinated slop. Removing thought and dreams from the human condition.

All this to say, if you are going to be online, own your platform as much as you can.

A new dark mode has been added that is both not a total void and keeps the original color feel going.

We're doing our best to make the text and content breathe on any device this is viewed on.

This mostly means, the text should feel better on the eyes.

We have enhanced the observatory experience to now include an audio element.
