Trance! Dance! House! Techno!

What?! You mean they aren't the same thing? You mean that I can't just call everything techno!? I think that is the equivalent of being told that your mother is actually your father. It's strange and hard to believe. Don't worry, I will go over the differences so that you and I will be more educated when our techno loving friends get mad at us for calling a house song trance.

Let's do this!

Ah, the general mothership music genre for these genres. It's similar to rock, although when I think of rock I think of shitty generic music instead of the awesome sounds of grindcore music.

Techno isn't really melodic, I mean really, it is usually just repeating noises and some enslaving beat. It's all about percussion here and more beats per minute. Also, it is I guess you could say on repeat for a long amount of time.

So when you find youself a slave to the beat, you are probably listening to techno.


Oh man! WOOO!!!!! That is pretty much what I think of when I hear dance music. You know why?

It's because you will find yourself listening to this deep pounding melodic stuff. These songs generally get the most attention because they reach the top of the charts.

This genre can be fun and covered in cheese. Mmm... generic tasty music. This stuff you can play to your friend and have them still think you aren't a total loser. Why? Becuase you will find them wanting to dance, drop some E and hump your couch till sunrise.

So when you find yourself a slave to the melody, you are probably listening to dance.


I must say this one is tricky. Why? Oh because this one can transcend genres.

Generally trance is more ambient sounding ish with more strong beats in it. It's all about atmosphere and soundscapes with trance. It is a bit more clean, what I mean by that is that it isn't all noise. You have your synths but they aren't hissing at you or anything, it's minimal!

Of course there is melodic trance which of course has melodic hooks that are a little more upbeat and covered in delicious cheesiness. Making it tasty and great background music.

So when you find yourself a slave to the soundscape and beat, you are probably listening to trance.


The last of my tour of the techno subgenres and probably one of the grooviest of them all.

House is a bit slower than the others but this can change, much like any genre. It's like techno, just not that melodic. More melodic than techno, less melodic than dance.

I can sum it up as techno but slowed down a bit and with some melodies to it.

So when you find yourself a slave to the groove, you are probably listening to house.

Conclusion!

I must say that really there is no true definition for these genres. I guess you could say I wrote what the general consensus is of these wonderful forms of music. Personally, I really could care less about genres of techno. I just thought I would try to break it down to those who don't listen to techno and say things like,"Aren't they all the same?" The answer to that is yes and no. Just think of it as emo and screamo. The only difference is screaming and maybe acoustic guitars.

Yeah, I actually can sit down and enjoy some delicious techno/house/dance/trace or whatever you want to call it without feeling like I compromised my American pride and manliness. You have to have to put this on and just dance to it, even if you can't dance.

I highly recommend getting together with some friends, find a techno compilation and buy a strobe light and have a wonderful techno dance party. It seriously is super awesome fun pants. Don't believe me? Try it and write me an e-mail on saying why it sucked.

I really can say for sure that I enjoy the more upbeat fun stuff. I often hear it referred to as happy hardcore, but then when I look up other happy hardcore all I hear is crap. It is safe to say there is a lot of crappy techno out there.

With that being said, listen to some techno and become a slave to the beat.
