The Monday Inquisition: IKEA Bacon

October 26th, 2008

Bacon, it's what is for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is a festive treat that anyone should enjoy. Seriously, if you don't like bacon you must hate America.

Bacon & You

Bacon is meat, delicious meat, which comes from the side, belly, or back of a pig. The USDA says bacon is "the cured bell of a swine carcass" which doesn't sound that appetizing if you ask me.

Bacon!

Of course you can have a similar treat from other animals or stuff. By stuff I am speaking about soy-based bacon that my vegetarian girlfriend describes as "dry and crappy." That is a total bummer for bacon lovers who feel the guilt of eating an animal that is pretty anatomically similar to a human. Then again do you actually expect a vegetarian alternative to be close or as good as the real deal?

They say bacon is unhealthy, that it will clog your arteries and make you fat. They say this is because of the preservative sodium nitrate. Well, then forget preserving it, right?

Aside from that health stuff, you can always count on bacon leaving a present for you, that present is bacon grease.

TIP: Cook hash browns in bacon grease, you will not regret it.

Another cool thing about bacon leftover is that you can just put it in your fridge for later. It's great to have "reserve bacon" for that club sandwich you just made or that "midnight munchies" urge that we all get. Heck, you can put it on your pizza that will make you feel complete. Bacon is just pure awesome and that is all you really need to know. Well, you should also remember that bacon does not need to just be a breakfast side treat, you can make it an addition to any meal.

IKEA Bacon

Here is what I said about IKEA bacon in a previous article:

"The bacon was bacon. I can only assume that though. It could very well be something else, but it did actually taste like bacon and was crispy but not too crispy. There really isn't much more to say other than, if this wasn't bacon it probably was Beggin' Strips." (IKEA Breakfast Review)

I really couldn't find any information regarding the process of how Swedes eat their bacon or prepare it. In Europe though, bacon is used mainly in cubes! Can you imagine cubed bacon? It's like sugar cubes but better! You can just pop those in one after the other.

Bacon Facts

Rasher is another name for a slice of bacon. But that is only for people with accents; in the States they call it a slice or strip. If you are crazy you call slices of bacon collops.

Canadian bacon or Canadian-style bacon is the bacon from the pig's back which is leaner than regular bacon.

The Irish used corned beef as a substitute for back bacon in the lat 1800s. Thanks to their Jewish neighbors they found out that corned beef is a cheap alternative to back bacon, too bad corned beef tastes like ass. Bacon bits are texturized vegetable protein that is just flavored to taste like bacon.

Bacon is awesome.

More Bacon!

Here are the best two bacon links I have come across.
